Monolifts
Primary type: Freeweight equipment
The Monolift is a specialised weightlifting apparatus primarily used for heavy squats. It allows lifters to position themselves under the barbell and squat without walking the weight out of the rack. This feature is particularly beneficial for heavy lifting, as it enables the athlete to conserve energy and maintain better form from the start of the lift.
How to use Monolifts
- Set the barbell to the correct height and load it with the desired weight.
- Position yourself under the barbell as you would for a regular squat.
- Once ready, a training partner or the lifter releases the hooks, lifting the weight off without stepping back.
- Perform the squat, and upon completion, move slightly forward to re-rack the weight.
Benefits of using Monolifts
- Allows for safer handling of heavy weights during squats.
- Reduces the risk of injury associated with 'walking out' heavy squats.
- Helps lifters maintain better form by focusing solely on the squat movement.
- Useful for powerlifters and those focusing on maximal strength development.
Targeted Muscles
- Primarily targets the lower body: quads, hamstrings, glutes, and calves.
- Also engages the core, back, and shoulders to stabilize the weight.
Common Exercises with Monolifts
- Heavy back squats, focusing on maximal strength training.
- Box squats for powerlifting training and technique work.
- Partial squats or squat lockouts for working on specific phases of the squat movement.
Skill Level
- Mostly used by intermediate to advanced athletes, especially in powerlifting.
- Beginners should familiarize themselves with standard squat techniques before using a Monolift.
Safety Tips
- Always use a spotter or spotters when lifting heavy weights.
- Ensure the hooks are properly set and functioning before starting.
- Practice the movement without weight to get accustomed to the Monolift mechanism.
Alternative/Similar Equipment
- Standard squat racks for conventional squatting.
- Power racks with safety bars for a safer squatting alternative.
- Smith machines for a guided squat movement.
